Once I established my speaking career, we enlist the aid of an adoption agency. Children’s House International helps us fulfill our dream. After speaking with one of their representatives, we decide to look for a child from Guatemala – partly because they told us that adoptions were going well in that country. They provide us with pictures and medical information about the children available for adoption.

When we see the pictures of Gracee Jo, we know this little angel was sent to earth just for us. We send in the necessary paperwork. We wait expectantly for the call that will tell us the processing is complete. Shortly after Thanksgiving, we get the okay to fly to Guatemala and pick up little Gracee. I am so excited to see our little girl, I can hardly sleep.

I want to go with Shondell, but since we won’t know the exact date in advance, it would be difficult for me to change my speaking schedule. I decide to stay home with our boys. Shondell's sister and family friends fly with her to
Guatemala to pick up baby Gracee.

When the foster mother brings Gracee to their motel room, they can tell that she has been well tended and loved. We had been sending care packages to make sure she had what she needed. She looked adorable in one of the little outfits we had sent. As Shondell signed the final papers, Gracee’s foster mother rocked her to sleep. She laid her on the bed, kissed her gently, and quietly left.

She realized she is going away empty-handed, knowing she will probably never see this child again. I hope she knows that she has made a wonderful difference, not only in the life of this orphan, but in the lives of her new family.
